Music
Although I’ve been making demos for my own bands ever since I first picked up an instrument back in 2000, I started recording professionally (that is: for money) in 2007. Since then, I’ve been involved in 50+ Demos, EP’s, and Full-Lengths, recorded in basements, practice Studios, independent studios, and at live concerts. Not an enormous number to be sure, and I certainly have quite a lot to learn, but I do have a bit of experience under my belt, particularly with heavier genres. I’m always looking for new production and/or engineering projects, and get particularly excited if someone tells me they’d like to try something new/different/experimental with their recording process!

Film
“Tone” (a short film by Aaron Nelson)
This was the biggest sound design project I’d undertaken, by far. Aaron (Nelson, writer/director/editor) created this as his senior project at MCAD, and as soon as I saw the rough edit, I knew this would be a fantastic film, and a great sound design project. Being a film without dialogue, getting the sound right was an important piece of the puzzle. Working closely with the writer/director/editor, I used a mixture of foley, synthesizers, samplers, and a few pre-recorded sounds. The majority of the audio was created & added in post.

“The M.D.P.H.P. Plan” (A short animation by Aaron Nelson)
One of Aaron’s first MCAD projects, this was my first experience putting sound to film. He’d written the majority of the music by the time he brought the project to me, but I did end up singing on it, along with our mutual friend Kevin Skaff. I ended up doing the majority of the voice-over, with another mutual friend Adam playing the skeptical interviewee. I love ridiculous projects like this!
“Cornstar” (a 48 Hour Film Festival 2008 film by Aaron Nelson and Steven Henningsgard)
Cornstar was the first film I had a hand in writing, and was an entry in the 2008 48 Hour Film Festival. For those not familiar with the concept, each group of filmmakers is given their own genre, and all films must include a specific line of dialogue, and a prop that you have to use (“You look very familiar”, and a fish, respectively), and are given exactly 48 hours to write, shoot, edit, and complete your film. Obviously, there’s a lot of pressure, and very little sleep involved with the festival, which makes it all the more fun! Writing & filming ended up going relatively well, with only minor hiccups.
However, we made the mistake of sleeping, which really cut into our editing time. As a result, I ended up tracking the dialogue and composing/recording the original music in a makeshift basement studio, whilst the film was being edited upstairs in the dining room. It was pure luck that the music ended up fitting almost perfectly with the editing job (possibly related to how long Aaron and I have been working together). It really came down to the wire when we realized just how long it was going to take for the film to render: a very time-consuming and tedious process, for those who’ve never had the pleasure. Overall, I think it turned out pretty well, and I’d love to participate again!
